Umpires

Without umpires the netball simply doesn't happen. Over the past couple of years we have gone from relying on external umpires to developing our own. All players are 'encouraged' to pick up a whistle at training, and mentoring is always at hand from our qualified umpires (see pictures below). Poly umpires are paid £20 to reflect the time and effort it takes to become qualified as well as the time/expense of getting to games.

Trainee umpires may umpire at North London in Divisions 5 & 4 once they have been assessed by a committee member in order for them to gain real match practice. Once they are confident, an application is made to the Middlesex Umpiring Secretary to take a C test, which includes umpiring at County or North London division 1 level and a 20 multiple choice test. C umpires can umpire in North London and the Middlesex Leagues. The next step is B award. The test includes a umpiring assessment at County Premier level or equivalent, and several verbal questions in front of a panel. For those wishing to go the extra mile, the A award is the top level of the domestic umpiring tree. All details can be found on the Middlesex County Netball League website.

Please email Helena Sedgwick who is our Umpiring Secretary, if you have any queries.

Umpiring Extras

Try to uses hand signals as much as possible. Lots of players find it hard to hear everything, so a visible demo works really well.

Even thought a rule needs updating - well it looks as though the days of waiting for a player to stand by your side may be over, watch this space for confirmation.
